About Me

Removing asbestos during a remodel

We bought our house knowing it needed a fair bit of work, but we could never have guessed how complicated the job would get in the end. It turns out not only do we have asbestos in the walls, but also, at some point, the previous owners had some asbestos insulation put in the roof. There are a lot more precautions that we need to make as result but, I'll feel a lot better knowing we aren't cooking and eating our meals near asbestos. Our remodeling contractor has been great and has stepped us through the whole process. Join us on our remodeling journey!

Three Aspects to Focus on When Picking Kitchen Cabinetry

by Joanne Sullivan

The cabinetry is central to a kitchen's design, setting the tone for the space. Here are three aspects of cabinetry to think about when planning your kitchen renovation.

Door Style

The door style you choose will depend on your kitchen decor. Some aesthetics suit detailed doors with a shaped, recessed centre panel. This contouring can be elaborate for a French provincial design or more simple for a Hamptons kitchen, which may have shaker doors on the cupboards. You can go in a different direction and fit flat doors in a modern, industrial, or contemporary kitchen. Some cupboards, such as shaker variations, can blend with a range of kitchen aesthetics as they have some detailing but are relatively simple.

Door Finish

Another consideration is the finish of the door. An expensive look is provided by two-pac doors. These use MDF inside, which is spray painted with a mixture of paint and a hardener. Once these two elements chemically react, they meld with the door, giving it a thick, lustrous coating. Two-pac doors will retain their looks for a long time as the finish is tougher than standard paint.

Vinyl-wrapped doors are another choice. These are created by a heat treatment that fuses the vinyl with the MDF. You can pick from various patterns, such as a faux timber look. Laminate is also an alternative. These doors are covered in a laminate sheet, available in different colours and designs, that is glued to the MDF. Quality vinyl-wrapped and laminate doors are both long-lasting. However, they may be damaged if they accidentally come into contact with a hot object.

Handles

The door handles are a crucial, visible element. The appropriate style will depend on the room's decor. A colonial kitchen with stained timber doors will suit simple knobs, as will a country kitchen. Knobs also come in decorative flower shapes and other contours. A traditional pull handle will look perfect in a vintage kitchen.

If you want to create a modern and clean look during custom kitchen renovations, you could fit rectangular bar-shaped handles. You might prefer to go without handles altogether, in which case you have a couple of options. You could install doors with a groove channel along the edge that looks like part of the door profile. Soft-push doors are another possibility. These use special hinges to keep the door from slamming shut, and so they reduce wear and tear as well.
