Removing asbestos during a remodel

We bought our house knowing it needed a fair bit of work, but we could never have guessed how complicated the job would get in the end. It turns out not only do we have asbestos in the walls, but also, at some point, the previous owners had some asbestos insulation put in the roof. There are a lot more precautions that we need to make as result but, I'll feel a lot better knowing we aren't cooking and eating our meals near asbestos. Our remodeling contractor has been great and has stepped us through the whole process. Join us on our remodeling journey!

Affordable Renovations That Can Add Value to Your Home

by Joanne Sullivan

You don't always need to spend money on renovating your home in order to actually increase the home's value, as some renovation projects are affordable and easy to manage on your own but can still add real value to a home. If you're thinking of giving your home a facelift and making some changes, note a few renovation and remodelling projects you can probably do yourself or with just a small budget, but which can pay off in the long run.

Flooring

You don't need to install solid hardwood or a stone floor to add value to your home; a laminate tile that looks and feels like wood or stone can be very attractive and easy to install, and also very affordable. Floating wood floors also come in slats that you tap together, so they stay in place without adhesives or glue, making them easy to install on your own and much more affordable than timber floors.

Removing a wall

As long as you're not removing a load-bearing wall, this renovation is typically simple and easy for you to do on your own; it can make a smaller, boxy home seem larger and more spacious and make entertaining easier as well. Be careful about removing a wall that would reduce the number of bedrooms in a home, but taking out a wall at the home's entryway or between the kitchen and dining areas can be good choices.

Exterior space

Think of the home's exterior space as an extension of the living space, and create a comfortable seating area outside, as this can increase a home's overall value. A wood deck is very inexpensive or you can put down paver stones to create a simple but valuable patio area.

Garage addition

Bumping out a wall of the garage and adding to the space is not difficult or expensive, and homeowners may appreciate the added storage space. You might also add to the height of the garage so there is storage overhead. Add rafters for holding storage bins and a window for more light and air, and this simple renovation might add real value to your property overall.

New windows

You don't need to invest in new windows for your entire home, but consider replacing the windows in the main sitting room for more light and air circulation. A picture window in the living room or bay window in the family room can be an affordable choice that makes the home more comfortable and inviting, and which then also adds value.

If you feel you can't do any of these projects on your own, it is best to contact a renovations contractor in your area to ensure you don't damage your home instead of add value to it.
