About Me

Removing asbestos during a remodel

We bought our house knowing it needed a fair bit of work, but we could never have guessed how complicated the job would get in the end. It turns out not only do we have asbestos in the walls, but also, at some point, the previous owners had some asbestos insulation put in the roof. There are a lot more precautions that we need to make as result but, I'll feel a lot better knowing we aren't cooking and eating our meals near asbestos. Our remodeling contractor has been great and has stepped us through the whole process. Join us on our remodeling journey!

Kitchen Renovations: Essential Considerations to Have

by Joanne Sullivan

Choosing to update your kitchen can be one of the most expensive renovations that you could invest in for your home. However, it may be unavoidable, especially if the house you live in is several decades old. Not only would an update make the kitchen more efficient but it also will make it more aesthetically appealing. Embarking on a kitchen renovation should never be done on a whim, though. There is an assortment of things to bear in mind to ensure that you will be satisfied with the remodelling project. Here are just a few of the essential considerations that you should have.

Keep your surfaces in mind

Kitchen surfaces tend to take up a considerable amount of space. Therefore, they will always have a significant impact on the attractiveness of the kitchen. If you have been using conventional tile that has acquired chips and grout stains over the years, it may be time to replace them with modern materials that provide you with an array of alternatives.

For instance, if you would want smooth surfaces then you could choose materials such as glass or timber. On the other hand, if you would like a tactile effect on your countertops, you could opt for natural stone or concrete.

When making a decision on what to use for your surfaces, you should also consider the long-term care and maintenance that they would need. As a rule of thumb, any porous materials that are used will require routine sealing and intensive cleaning to ensure that bacteria and other microbes do not breed in the pores of the material.

Keep your lighting in mind

Another crucial design element when engaging in a kitchen renovation is lighting. Nonetheless, a mistake commonly made is exclusively relying on overhead lighting. Granted, this will provide the room with overall illumination. However, one source of lighting will not ensure that all the dark shadows are eliminated from the kitchen.

The second source of lighting that you should consider installing is task lighting. As the name implies, this type of lighting functions to ensure you have adequate illumination when performing individual tasks such as food prep. Therefore, they are typically installed over a workspace or countertop.

The third type of lighting to consider during your renovation would be accent lighting. This form of lighting is designed to enhance the visual interest in the kitchen. For instance, if you would like to draw attention to your beautifully designed splashbacks, you could have your accent lighting installed on the same wall.
